» CHIEF'S MESSAGE

Summer is here! We are all outside enjoying the beautiful weather, getting out on the water swimming, boating, fishing and enjoying the many opportunities here in the area. Part of Pend Oreille County Fire District No. 3’s mission is to serve the community with public education to reduce the occurrence of emergencies and to better prepare our community members if an event occurs. With this in mind, we would like to remind you of some of the safe practices when playing on or around the water this summer.

Keep your boat in top operating condition
Always maintain a safe speed to avoid collisions
Know and practice the rules of the water
Maintain an unobstructed view forward at all times. Scan the surroundings to avoid tunnel vision.
Sun, wind, motion intensity and vibration can increase the effect of alcohol; don’t mix water and alcohol
Always wear a life jacket. Approximately 86% of all drowning would have survived had they worn their life jacket!
Take a boating safety course. Visit our online presentation!
When towing passengers on tubes, skis or boards have a spotter
Don’t overload your boat
Communicate your boating plans to someone who can call for help if needed
Beware of propellers! Shut off your engine when people are in the water near your prop.
Be aware of the weather and possible changes
Lastly, be a safe and responsible boater.
