» THE WORKSHOP

CPR for Family and Friends WorkshopThis was the seventh in the series of  Community Fire and Health Safety Workshops offered by Pend Oreille County Fire District No. 3.

At this workshop on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Family and Friends, participants learned what to do in a life-threatening emergency,   With the knowledge learned at this two-hour Saturday morning session, they may be able to save the life of a loved one, a friend, or a neighbor.  The instructor, Firefighter and EMT, Leonard Pielli, helped everyone at the workshop understand their role in the "Chain of Survival", how to recognize four life threatening emergencies in adults (heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking), and how to perform CPR.

Workshop activities included an instructional video, demonstrations, practice sessions, and handouts.

Refreshments were provided by Fire District No. 3 Auxiliary members Julie Johnson, Hilde Turner, Beryl Pielli, and Doris Egland.

» FIRE CHIEF'S REVIEW OF AMA COURSE INFORMATION

You could save the life of a loved one, a friend, or a neighbor.  Learn the skills of the American Heart Association course, CPR for Family and Friends.

The American Heart Association Chain of Survival

You can increase the chance of survival for victims of life-threatening emergencies if you act quickly to begin the Chain of Survival.  The four links or actions in the chain are (1) early access - phone 911, (2) early CPR - begin CPR, (3) early defibrillation - perform defibrillation, and (4) early advanced care - transfer to advanced care by paramedics, nurses, and physicians.

Know when to phone 9-1-1

Learn to recognize four life-threatening emergencies in adults

  • Heart attack

  • Cardiac arrest

  • Stroke

  • Choking (airway blocked by a foreign body)

Adult CPR: Early Action Saves Lives

  • Shout for help

  • Phone 911 ("phone first")

  • Begin CPR

Infant or Child CPR: Early Action Saves Lives

  • Shout for help--If someone responds, send that person to phone 911

  • Begin the steps of CPR and provide approximately 1 minute of rescue support (as many of these CPR steps as the victim needs)

  • If you are alone, phone 911 after 1 minute of rescue support

Be able to perform the steps of adult CPR

  • Recognize unresponsiveness

  • Assess for normal breathing

  • Provide rescue breathing

  • Assess for signs of circulation

  • Provide chest compressions

  • Provide 15:2 cycles of compressions and ventilations for adult victims and 5:1 cycles for infants and children

A - Airway;  B - Breathing

  • Open the airway using the head tilt-chin lift or jaw-thrust maneuver

  • Check for breathing (look, listen, and feel)

  • Give 2 slow breathes, ensuring adequate chest rise

  • Allow for exhalation between breaths

C - Circulation

  • Look for signs of circulation (coughing, breathing, and movement); chest compressions

  • Locate proper position for chest compressions on the lower half of the sternum

  • Begin chest compressions adequate to move the sternum down approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches

  • Perform 2 cycles of compressions and ventilations

Heimlich Maneuver for Choking

If the victim is responsive but cannot speak, use the Heimlich maneuver.

  • Stand behind the victim and make a fist with one hand.

  • Place the thumb side of the fist on the victim's abdomen, slightly above the navel and below the breastbone.

  • Grasp the fist with your other hand and provide quick upward thrusts into the victim's abdomen.

What to do if you are alone and the victim is unresponsive:

  • Shout for help

  • Phone 911 ("phone first")

  • Begin the steps of CPR

If other rescuers are present, send them to phone 911 while you begin CPR.

Keep your skills sharp: practice CPR

  • Review the steps and skills of CPR several times every year

  • Complete an AHA CPR renewal course every 2 years

  • Encourage your family and friends to learn CPR

Never practice CPR on another person!
