Community Volunteer Beryl Pielli

Commission Secretary / Historian / Auxiliary Treasurer

Photographer / Seamstress

Community Volunteer of the Year 2005

Beryl began volunteer service with Pend Oreille County Fire District No. 3 just before her retirement from the Spokane Department of Social and Health Services at the end of 1999.  Initially, she took minutes at the Fire Commissioner's Meetings. Then, seeing the need, she became the fire district's seamstress, mending turnout gear, sewing on patches and reflective tape and making adjustments to the firefighters jumpsuits and pants.

Shortly after she became a volunteer, Assistant Chief Larry Naccarato asked Beryl if she would be interested in keeping up the district's photo album.  When she agreed to take on this responsibility, he handed her a small album, old rolled up newspapers, scrapbook decals and a stack of photos. Over the past six years the single album has grown into a five-volume History Library with nearly a thousand pages, which Beryl continues to maintain. All of the History Album pages will soon be accessible online for public viewing and download in PDF file format from the new History Album section of fire district's Web site.

Beryl and her husband reside at Sacheen Lake where she continues her involvement with Fire District No. 3 as a Commission secretary, historian, and Fire District No. 3 Auxiliary treasurer.  Outside of the fire district Beryl is a member of St. Anthony’s Altar Society, Sacheen Lake Ladies of the Lake, and the Pend Oreille County Democrats.  Beryl is now completing her training for the Pend Oreille County CASA program and is looking forward to using her former skills as a social worker.

Beryl and Leonard enjoy their six children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who live throughout the country between Shelton, Washington and Boston, Massachusetts.
