Health Care Providers Course

Pend Oreille County Fire District No. 3 has been providing Emergency Medical Services training county-wide since 2000.

The American Heart Association Health Care Provider course is a pre-requisite requirement for BLS Instructor Certification training and is taught by EMS Captain Darwin "Buck" Cole and Diamond Lake Station Captain Alex Arnold.

The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. These healthcare providers may include (but are not limited to) physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physicians assistants, residents or fellows or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, and other allied health personnel.

The course is also designed for anyone who is required to take a healthcare provider course for employment. Proficiency in the skills of this course is a prerequisite for AHA advanced courses in resuscitation, including advanced cardiovascular like support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and BLS instructor courses.

This 6- to 8- hour program involves multiple learning activities: a videotaped overview of the Chain of Survival and other cognitive information; an instructor-led discussion of the adults signs of hearth attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking; videotaped skills demonstration and practice; instructor-led practice scenarios; and peer practice sessions. The length of the course is determined to a large extent by the participant-instructor ratio (6:1 is recommended).

Two separate manuals accompany this course: BLS for Healthcare Providers and Fundamentals of BLS for Healthcare Providers may be used by anyone taking the BLS Healthcare Provider Course. It should definitely be used by all licensed and certified healthcare professionals.

Fundamentals of BLS for Healthcare Providers was developed in response to many request from non-licensed healthcare providers and others with a minimal healthcare background who are required to take this course for employment. The instructor should be prepared to recommend which manual is appropriate for a participant.

All participants who complete the course should be able to demonstrate the skills of CPR, mouth to mask and bag-mask ventilation, use of AED’s, and relief of FBAO for responsive and unresponsive victim. All participants who successfully complete the course, including the written examination and skills demonstration, will receive a BLS for Healthcare Provider completion card (credential).

The AHA developed the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course curriculum to achieve one primary goal: to improve rates of survival from sudden cardiac arrest by strengthening the Chain of Survival in every healthcare setting and community. The course teaches the skills that encompass the first 3 links in the chain. It emphasizes the importance of early activation of 911 (or other emergency response number), CPR (with mouth to mask and bag-mask ventilation), and use of an AED. It also teaches relief of FBAO in responsive and unresponsive victims. Finally, the course attempts to prevent disability and death and the need for CPR by teaching the warning signs of heart attach, respiratory arrest, and stroke in adults and by teaching methods to reduce death caused by sudden infant death syndrome in infants and injuries in children.

4. Describe strategies to prevent sudden infant death syndrome in infants and injuries in children

At the end of the course the participant will be able to demonstrate the following skills using an adult or infant and child manikin (determined by the course modules completed) and a telephone:

1. Activation of the emergency response system (phone 911 or other response system)

2. Rescue breathing using mouth-to-mouth ventilation, mouth-to-barrier device ventilation (with and without oxygen), and bag-mask ventilation with oxygen for adult, infant, and child victims.

Pend Oreille Fire District No. 3 provides American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends workshops for the community. At each workshop participants learn what to do in a life-threatening emergency requiring cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. With the knowledge learned at one of these two-hour Saturday morning sessions, you may be able to save the life of a loved one, a friend, or a neighbor. The instructor will help you understand your role in the "Chain of Survival", how to recognize four life threatening emergencies in adults (heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking), and how to perform CPR. Workshop activities include an instructional video, demonstrations, practice sessions, and handouts. Refreshments are provided by Fire District No. 3 Auxiliary members.
