2005 FALL BASIC FIREFIGHTER ACADEMY

The 2005 Fall Basic Firefighter Academy was held this fall from Sept. 10  through Nov. 5, 2005.  This year's academy had great instructors, great facilities and plenty of hands-on training for district firefighter’s!

» Course Overview

The classes were held on Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. The  course was designed to train and ready Pend Oreille County firefighter’s to meet the applicable WAC standards for a structural entry firefighter.

The class fee was $140.00 per student. This cost included a textbook and Study Guide that the student kept and covered the costs of First Aid Certification and other Academy supplies. (WSP Firefighter I training reimbursement was available.)

Students were required to have compliant Structural PPE, SCBA and be familiar with donning the equipment issued to them at the start of the academy. Each student was expected to read Chapter 1 of the 4thedition IFSTA essentials prior to the first class.

» Training Expectations

The Pend Oreille County Training Council (POCTC) has spent many hours preparing for this class. We have attempted to prepare the best possible learning experience for you to excel at being a firefighter. This is only the beginning of your training. YOU must attempt to make the most out of all of your learning opportunities.

The POCTC has scheduled a number of experienced and trained firefighters to share with you the basic knowledge for you to go forward with your department as a volunteer firefighter. If you wish to go further with your fire training as a career, this training will give you an excellent starting point.

The POCTC has expectations of you, as a participant in this program, to get the most out of this training.

  1. Read the material that will be covered in the class PRIOR to coming to class. This will allow for you to have a better understanding of the subject and allow for increased interaction with the students and the instructors.

  2. Quizzes will be given on the material that will be covered. Typically, the material in the quiz will have been covered in the reading, in the lecture portion and in the hands on if applicable. Quizzes will be scored and 70% minimum will be considered a passing grade. You must study and listen and participate in order to pass!

  3. Class attendance is expected at all sessions. If you are not able to attend you must contact Chief Havener to arrange for makeup time if you expect to successfully complete the academy.

  4. Be on time! When class starts on time we have the best opportunity to complete on time. Be ready to learn!

  5. Respect of your classmates, instructors and assistants is mandatory. Inappropriate behavior, language or harassment of participants during the academy will not be tolerated. This may be grounds for dismissal from the academy. Your Chief or training officer will be contacted for discipline within your department.

  6. Participation in the hands on portion is key to the learning experience. You will be evaluated by the Instructors throughout the academy on your skills that are acquired in the training. Successful completion of the academy is also dependent upon your ability to perform in the hands on portion.

If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact an instructor or me.

Good Luck and Train Smart, Train Hard!
