(Formerly Pend Oreille Fire District No. 3) South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue is an organization of community volunteers who operate under the leadership of a professional fire chief. We strive to perform our assigned duties with pride and professionalism by acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to protect our community, county, and country. » Fire Grant May Map South County While county departments are working to parcel-map all of Pend Oreille County, one fire district is helping out with a grant that will map the county and provide wildland fire information to departments. South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue chief Mark Havener said the fire prevention and safety grant, issued from the Department of Homeland Security, would pay to digitally map the parcels within and south of Pend Oreille Fire District No. 4. The goal, Havener said, is to allow fire districts to identify high-risk properties near wildlands. Havener said the south county area sees 50-60 wildland fires, and 95 percent of residences are near wildlands. Homes nearby would qualify for the fire district’s fuel mitigation efforts – clearing low growing shrubs or yard waste that could spread fires from the ground to the canopy. “If we don’t do fuel mitigations, it’s more likely to have homes threatened,” Havener said, adding that lots of little elements go into reducing wildland fire risk. Residents can increase the defensible space between wildland and houses, and a landscape design that incorporates fire-resistant plant life can protect homes. READ MORE
